Sample clipboard sheet - with names and notes for heterogeneous grouping

Explanation for the files - notes sent by email from Jocelyn:

The first set of sheets are group “clipboard” sheets for observing and debriefing. (I will also be using Maria’s debriefing guide on the side.) You can see that there are spaces for you to write in the topic under each set of names.  I have an “8-group” sheet  (that has names filled in – you can delete them!) and a “7-group” sheet, and a “6-group” sheet.

For each round, I just type in the unit name and the period, print 3 or 4 sheets, make changes for the next class, etc. I stack ‘em up on the clipboard. As each round starts, I  write in the round number and date(s) at the top, the topics for each group, and then I pencil in Fac, H/R, Rptr, MM next to each student’s name.

I use the first column for my observations and the second for taking notes as I watch the presentation. The  bullets column is for the Task Evaluation Criteria and the numbered column is for the Discussion Questions.  (I have the teacher Debriefing sheet next to me, too.) I mark checks, check-plusses, check-minuses and big fat circles (missing!) for each bullet/DQ.  I record the presentation grade on the sheets.

I use the margins of these sheets to record what I covered in the Orientation and how much time was used and at what point  we will resume next class. I stack up five clipboards in the chalk tray near my desk (one for each class – I use a similar system for APUSH, too!). They are my record of each round. (My TA can enter the grades onto my gradesheets from there. When she shows up….)

The second type of template (“4th period GROUPS”) is what I use to record the members of the groups. I’m sending it with students’ names filled in so you can see how it would work. Some kids’ names are highlighted in various colors as a reminder to me who got a good test score, who is low status, etc.  As we finish a unit, I copy  all the names to an unused column and then highlight and drag and drop each student into a new group  for the next unit.

Since I’m on a pedantic streak, I’ll go ahead and point out that once you have your groups made up on the GROUPS-FORMING sheet, you can line up your OBSERVATION groups sheet alongside and copy-and-paste each set of names into its corresponding box.

Hope these will be helpful or a springboard for modifications to fit your style.

Jocelyn
