Special Notes on Teaching “The Good, The
Bad and the Ugly” Introductory Activities
***The first introductory activity, “The Good, The
Bad, and the Ugly” comes in two versions.
1. The
first version contains four separate activities, one each on
militarism, alliances, nationalism, and imperialism, and can be used
as a stand-alone unit, if you like. You may choose to teach one round
of these four activities to give your students a brief overview of the
long-term causes, or you may choose to do several rounds in order to
give them a deeper understanding of the causes of the war. If you
choose to use the materials for one round only, you will need to be
very active in your orientation to the activity and as the students
work in their groups, asking questions and pushing students to a
deeper level, since the material is complex and can stand to go
through several rounds. You will need a double set of these activities
so that you have enough for eight groups.
2. The
second version contains just one activity, with one resource card each
on militarism, alliances, nationalism, and imperialism. This version
is a good option to use if you want to teach the long-term causes in
one round. There are four different versions of the Activity Card,
each with a different task and task evaluation criteria. The four
different versions were included so that the presentations and
debriefing are not redundant. You will need a double set of these
activities so that you have enough for eight groups.
