"The Good, the Bad and the Ugly"
WWI
Orientation Activities
|
2005 Versions
The first orientation activity, "The Good, the Bad and
the Ugly," focuses on the
long-term causes of WWI. There are two main options for teaching
it:
-
a longer version that can be used as a stand-alone
unit, if desired. It has a separate activity with several
resource cards for each long-term cause: militarism, alliances,
nationalism, and imperialism. It provides greater depth of
understanding of the long-term causes, but really must be done in more
than one round to access that depth. If you choose to use the
materials for one round only, you will need to be very active in your
orientation to the activity and as the students work in their groups,
asking questions and pushing students to a deeper level, since the
material is complex.
-
a condensed version created for the 2005-2006 school
year. It combines all four of the long-term causes into one
activity, with only one resource card each for militarism, alliances,
nationalism and imperialism. The condensed version provides less
in-depth coverage of the long-term causes, but will take less time
since it can be taught once. There are four different group
tasks, but all students work with the same
resource cards.
Important: when printing copies, please be sure
to print each of the activities twice so that you have enough copies
for up to eight groups.
